CTER TECH SUPPORT-Frequently Asked Questions about Links

Questions:

Answers:

1. How come a link from my web page doesn't work?

  • Here are some recommendations about URL's to keep in mind:
    • Don't use any spaces or other punctuation marks in your file name (except for "-" or "_")
    • Use all lower case in your file names - mixed case doesn't matter on our server, bu tif you move your files later to another server, inconsistent case may cause problems for you. *Be sure to end each of your Web page file names with ".htm" or ".html"
    • Be sure to end each of your JPEG graphic file names with ".jpg" or ".jpeg"
    • Be sure to end each of your GIF graphic file names with ".gif"
    • Be sure to end each of your Quicktime movie file names with ".mov"
    • If you don't do this, some Web servers & browsers won't show the files correctly.
    • When adding a link to a file, copy the file name and then paste it into your Web editor.
    • When you find a URL you want to add while browsing the Web, but don't have access to your file, don't write down on paper an dtype it in later. Instead, use the Web browser to email the URL to yourself, and then later, copy it from the email to your Web file.

2. How come the link from the CTER page to my ePortfolio page is now "broken"?

  • Here are some possible reasons that the link is broken:
    • the URL of your ePortfolio has been changed when you make changes on your ePortfolio. If you notice that the link of your ePortfolio and the link on CTER page are different, please email your URL to cter-tech-L@listserv.illinois.edu so that the link on CTER page can be updated.
    • Be sure that your ePortfolio web page file name is ended with ".htm" or ".html", and be sure that the link on CTER page and your ePortfolio link have exactly the same extension, for example, both are ".htm", or both are ".html". If one is ".htm" and the other is ".html", the two links are considered to different URLs.
    • If your ePortfolio is put up in Netfiles instead of the COE server, all the content saved in your Netfiles will be removed six months after your graduation. Therefore, we suggest that you put up your ePortfolio in the COE server, which keeps all your files after your graduation.
    • If your ePortfolio is in the COE server, when the COE server is down, which doesn't happen often, your ePortfolio will not be accessible. However, that doesn't mean that your file is lost, your ePortfolio will be accessible as soon as the COE server is resumed.
