EPSY 400 & 490 OL: Developments in Educational Psychology - Learning and Classroom Management (CRN: 40617)

Overview | Course Instructors | Textbooks

"This course allowed for verification or discourse of research presented through postings and feedback of colleagues and instructor. The instructor presented the material in a way that prompted inquiry and reflective practice, allowing purposeful connections and applications to take place relevant to our unique workplace situation." (CTER student, 2001)

Overview
Readings and assignments in this course cover some of the psychologies that have driven the models and research trends in classroom learning and management. Information about these psychologies will come from a variety of sources, including, textbooks, journals, scholarly books and online informational sources. The course will also include a series of 7 lectures that is designed to put the content material into an historical perspective, and to lend examples, testimonies and other experiential snippets that will elaborate the text materials.

Of course, much content information will flow from student to student, since their backgrounds are so varied and rich. The communication of persons in the class will be mainly from student to student, rather than the typical instructor to student.

As suggested in the course title, this course is an amalgamation of two. One of those courses is EPSY400 Psychology of Learning in Education – a graduate course that helps fulfill the educational psychology foundation requirement. The other course EPSY490OL, is a special course designed for use by students enrolled in the Curriculum, Technology and Educational Reform (CTER) masters program at UIUC. EPSY490 is a combination of EPSY400 and EPSY406 (the psychology of classroom management), and is offered to CTER students for 4 credit hours. Since students in EPSY400 and EPSY490 cover the same content during the first 1⁄2 of the course, students enrolled in them will interact frequently as the same content/textbook/lectures are encountered.
